Dear Brea Olinda Unified School District Community,
The purpose of this communication is to provide an update to yesterday’s social media concern. We appreciate the support of the Brea Police Department, who had a strong showing along Wildcat Way and onto the Brea Olinda High School campus today. All schools are operating safely. Brea PD is continuing its investigation, and recently posted the following update:
“Since yesterday's arrest of a Brea High School student for Criminal Threats, there have been a number of rumors circulating about a planned shooting. This morning there was a posting on a social media site that indicated the arrested student had planned to carry out a shooting today, April 20th, which is the 18 year anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting. While this is still an ongoing investigation, we can say that we have not uncovered any evidence that this suspect planned an attack for today, nor have we seen any direct reference to the Columbine incident.
With the proliferation of social media, it is very easy for rumors such as this to spread like wildfire and suddenly be referred to as facts. Please be cautious about forwarding things such as this that have not come directly from a verified law enforcement source.
We understand that parents and students are concerned about an incident such as this, and curious for additional details. We will release as much information as we can, but we have to be mindful of the investigative process. We cannot afford to jeopardize a criminal investigation, just so we can satisfy the public's desire for more details.”
We want to assure you that we remain vigilant, doing all we can to provide a safe, orderly campus environment for all and take these matters very seriously. We would encourage everyone to please notify Brea PD of any suspicious behavior or postings. Remember, "If you see something, say something."
