GATE

The Brea Olinda Unified School District (BOUSD) Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program ensures that all students are provided an educational program that will maximize each student’s continuous academic growth, nurture their diverse social and emotional development needs, as well as recognize and enhance individual strengths and interests.  We do this by providing students with a differentiated core curriculum that is designed to provide depth and complexity in thinking, as well as opportunities for novelty and in-depth research while nurturing their social and emotional well-being.  

Instructional support for gifted learning is based on current research and best practices in the field of gifted education and offers the necessary challenge for gifted students to reach their fullest potential. Our model of clustering GATE students within mixed-ability classrooms allows to them to work with peers at all levels and further develop their academic, social, and emotional skills in an all day differentiated program.

BOUSD assesses all third graders for the GATE program by administering either the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) or the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT), which is designed for English Learners.  Students in fourth through sixth grade are eligible to take the assessment based on either parent or teacher recommendation.  In order to qualify for the program, students must obtain a 92% or above in one area on the OLSAT or NNAT.  Parents are notified by the fall of the following year if their student has qualified for GATE. This notification is followed by a meeting with the classroom teacher to discuss and establish goals for the Individual GATE Plan for the year during parent conference week in October.

Ethnic Minority Identification
Federal law (Title 5, Sections 3820(f) and 3831) requires that the district seek out, identify and ensure full participation of pupils from disadvantaged and varying linguistic, economic and cultural backgrounds. To that end, the district teaching staff is asked to identify high-achieving minority students who may not be GATE identified because of language barriers. Those students will be tested using the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT). It is our intent to identify minority students in percentages commensurate with their enrollment in our district.
