District Launches Transitional Kindergarten Program

The Kindergarten Readiness Act, a historic reform to kindergarten education, gives the Brea Olinda Unified School District an opportunity to ensure that more children each year are better prepared to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.

The BOUSD believes that school readiness is more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic.  This legislation enables the BOUSD to create a transitional kindergarten program to support the development and achievement of the youngest learners.

Research has shown that students who enter kindergarten at age four have a higher likelihood of retention and learning delays in comparison to their older peers.  While younger students may do well academically in kindergarten, they are often at a disadvantage in middle and high school areas such as social maturity and athletics.

The BOUSD is proud to address these concerns through the creation of a standards-based transitional kindergarten program that is designed to meet both the academic and social-emotional needs of younger students.

  • Students who will turn 5 in late summer or fall are given the opportunity to participate in a developmentally appropriate two-year kindergarten program.
  • All transitional kindergarten classes will be taught by fully credentialed kindergarten teachers.
  • Enrollment will be based on space availability.  Families interested in participating in the transitional kindergarten program should download the application by clicking HERE and submit it to the school district’s Educational Services Office.

Call Heidi Burns, (714) 990-7556, or email hburns@bousd.us for more information.

Resources for Talking to Students about Tragic News

When news of tragic events is presented in the media, it is important that we all take time to talk to our children about trying to understand and deal with news that is truly unsettling.   Few of us are formally trained to lead these types of discussions.  Listed below are links to websites that provide valuable guidance on how to facilitate these conversations:

Helping Youth and Children Recover from Traumatic Events is a compilation of resources from the U. S. Department of Education, other federal agencies, and counseling experts.

ALERT -- Pertussis (Whooping Cough) is an epidemic in California.  Pertussis is a bacterial infection of the respiratory tract that is very contagious.  Due to this current epidemic, Assembly Bill 354 was signed on September 29, 2010.  This bill took affect July 1, 2011, and requires that all students entering 7th through 12th grade provide proof of immunization for Pertussis before starting the 2011-2012 school year.  This requirement can be met by receiving one dose of Tdap vaccine, the tetanus and Pertussis booster, on or after the student’s 7th birthday.  If your child has not received the Tdap vaccination, please call your doctor’s office or the Orange County Health Care Agency and make an appointment to have your child vaccinated.  Any questions please contact Lindsey Zermeno, RN, Brea Olinda District Nurse at 714-990-7850 ext 1231.
